CBD OIL: myth or fact

After the popularity of our previous article Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil which outlined the difference between the two products, we have decided to do another blog focusing on the myths and facts of CBD oil, as there still seems to be a lot of confusion.

So here we go!

  1. Does Australian Primary Hemp sell CBD Oil?

MYTH: Australian Primary Hemp doesn’t produce or sell CBD oil.

  1. Does Australian Primary Hemp Oil contain CBD?

MYTH: Our Hemp Oil is cold pressed using the whole and intact seed from the hemp plant which contains little to no CBD, and therefore is not considered a therapeutic product. Our Hemp Oil is a health food containing a perfect ratio of omega 3 and 6. If you wish to substitute this for another medicine you are taking, please speak to your doctor first.

  1.  Is CBD legal in Australia?

FACT: CBD oil has been legalised in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), but it must be prescribed by a doctor who is registered under the Safe Access Scheme and the product must be approved by the TGA. Please be aware, that laws may differ between states.

The Australian Government Department of Health and the TGA released a statement saying, “The Australian Government is facilitating access to medicinal cannabis products to appropriate patients for medical conditions where there is evidence to support its use. To achieve this, a number of legislative and regulatory changes have been implemented at the Commonwealth level through the Department of Health, comprising of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Office of Drug Control (ODC).”

  1. How can I legally purchase CBD oil?

FACT: Unfortunately, the laws around CBD are very strict, making it difficult for people in need to get their hands on it!

We are hoping this will change, but currently, the process is far from easy. The Department of Health and the TGA have put together a document highlighting the procedure below.

The flowchart below is more applicable to doctors who may wish to provide CBD to their patients. Although, Question 3’s answer is somewhat more in line with how customers can actually buy it.

  1. Can I import CBD from overseas?

MYTH: CBD oil is illegal to import unless you have the correct licensing. This includes purchasing CBD from overseas sites to ship to Australia.

The Office of Drug Control states, “Imports of these goods that do not have the relevant import permissions will be seized at the border.”

  1. Is the CBD I have found in Australia actually CBD?

GAMBLE: With such tight restrictions around CBD oil, testing has found a lot of the underground CBD being sold in Australia is actually fake.

A study conducted by The New Daily found that 50% of the tested underground CBD products sold in Australia did not contain any CBD. You can read more about this here: https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/national/2018/01/12/medicinal-cannabis-australia/.

For now, until these restrictions are weakened, it will be extremely hard to obtain “legal” CBD oil in Australia. We hope for the sake of all those suffering out there with pain, that this happens quickly!

We hope you found this informative.
